Pennsylvania Dutch Blackberry Mush

Desserts for the Pennsylvania Dutch were more likely to be
"poverty puddings" from the thrifty Colonial past. This dessert, however,
showed promise and turned out to be quite good, with lemon
and sugar added to the thickened cooked blackberries.

One \6-ounce package frozen blackberries, or 1 quart fresh
l/2 cup water
l/2 cup sugar
1A cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Heavy cream

Place the berries in a heavy saucepan. Add the water and cover.
Cook over medium heat 15 minutes, or until the blackberries are soft.
Put the berries through a strainer to remove the seeds. Mix the sugar
and flour, and stir into the blackberry mixture. Return to the heat,
bring to a boil, and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Add the
lemon juice. Pour into individual dessert dishes and chill. Serve with
cream to pour over each serving.
